“Family are the ones who will always be there for you"...unless they disapprove of you, or are dying, or can never be born.
BLOOD RELATIVE is a solo autobiographical dramatic re-telling by genderqueer artist and fertility-challenged Ren Lunicke (of the award-winning dark comedy “Ze”: queer as f*ck!) featuring Ren’s disapproving radical evangelical mum and Ren’s beloved grandmother, whom both care-take in the months prior to her passing. All three generations struggle in the shadow of death to dominate the narrative of what makes a “happy family.” Constantly disappointed by their expectations for each other, they must examine the power and possibility to redefine and remake "family" for themselves.

BLOOD RELATIVE is an honest look at the complications of the modern concept of family.

Matinee Season at Gryphon is full-length 75 min

*This show will be performed at local retirement villages for free in addition to the ticketed shows. Check these web-listings regularly for updates.*

Deep South Caesar is Nero meets Narcissus meets those guys from the Mainland Cheese Ads. It's a one-woman show telling the very important story of Greg, just your average kiwi bloke whose life just happens to bare an uncanny resemblance to a Greek tragedy. Greg isn't the most reliable narrator though, and as he tells the audience his story of life growing up on the farm, his blissful marriage, the building of his small subdivided property Empire and of course, it's ultimate demise - we're definitely left questioning whether Greg is the great guy he's adamantly telling us he is.

What is that space between existing and not existing? When someone leaves home but doesn't arrive anywhere, where are they? There was once a time when you could leave one place and expect to arrive at another place; perhaps even to the destination you had set out for. But what if this doesn't happen? What if you arrive somewhere which is actually nowhere? Well, there was a man, a powerful man, who had left home one day, whose plane had crashed, and, of course, did not arrive where he had intended. He found himself in such a place, a nowhere place, a place he thought both extraordinary and implausible; he refused to believe any of it. His hosts were expecting him and try to put him at ease. But who are these hosts and what is their true function? And what of the world he has left behind? Will it stand still until he returns? Can he return? What will he do if he does? Or will all this happen again, and again, and again…? And what has a galah got to do with it anyway? A somewhat existential yet funny journey into the nature of being.
GALAH: A loud, annoying and yet colourful breed of Australian cockatoo not noted for its intelligence.
